One of the questions I’m often asked is: “how easy is it to move to public cloud?” There’s only one answer: it depends. Unless we understand exactly what an organisation’s objectives are, and what systems and applications it has (and some organisations don’t know this themselves) it’s impossible to give a definite answer. There are too many variables and dependencies that can affect the end result.
Backups are a business essential. They give us the reassurance that, if one day something goes badly wrong, we’ll have our critical business information backed up and ready to retrieve. But they take a lot of time and resource. That’s partly because data size and composition of varying formats keeps increasing; plus, in spite of deduplication, a lot of legacy data remains, especially on old media where it’s not easily recoverable.
